Most Linden members moved into our building in the fall of 2019, but that was not the beginning of our story. The move-in date was the culmination of many years of planning and decision-making. Many current Linden members and past members spent more than 5 years working on the plans and processes to make Linden a reality. Two separate cohousing groups joined forces to create the Linden community.
- 2014: Began meeting to discuss the idea of cohousing at Union Corners.
- 2016: Pooled our money to hire a Project Manager (Greg Rosenberg) and an Architect (Jim Glueck), and found a new Developer (Accipiter Properties) when the Union Corners site didn’t work out.
- Greg is interviewed by local Madison community radio, WORT, about developing “Coho Madison” (an early working name for the unnamed community that would become Linden).
- 2017: Began the serious planning phase, during which we created and came to agreement on our initial major Policies and Procedures.
- 2018 July 18: Our groundbreaking ceremony, complete with the mayor, jugglers and music…and then 15 months of construction, while we created bylaws and condo documents.
- 2019 October 18: The first household moved in, followed by 44 more!
In the years since, we have created and refined our Mission, Values and structure of board, committees, work and task groups. We have evolved into a truly wonderful, cooperative, multi-generational community…much like an extended family!
